“Why is Crossfit so expensive?” / “The price is out of market;” These are two statements that you’ll probably hear more than once.
A lot of people believe that Crossfit is pretty much the same as the usual gym. Make no mistake, Crossfit is a discipline of its own that involves many other aspects in the fitness world.
Let’s take a closer look and see what makes it pricier than a normal gym.
The box is not a gym
The crossfit box, although we usually call it a gym, has nothing to do with “traditional” facilities. The “box” equipment is completely different and more targeted.
Also, this equipment is official and designed for the practice of crossfit and, more specifically, for each required task.
It’s true that crossfit “copies” techniques from other disciplines. However, keep in mind that the tools you find in the box are targeted. They’re designed in a way that you perform those exercises more efficiently.
It’s not just about money
More than a “membership,” the feeling of joining the crossfit community makes it very special for the first time. Everybody is usually very supportive and help each other out. This is very important because motivation is the key to achieving personal fitness goals.

Crossfit’s added value
Nutritional tips and events are an important part of the crossfit community. Likewise, consider the amount of effort it takes for the staff to organize all activities, courses, tournaments, etc.
These are added values of crossfit that are not included in your typical gym.
Crossfit or gym? Super guide to advantages and disadvantages
Since I was a kid, I’ve always been fascinated with sports. Luckily for me, I was very good at most of them. As I grew older (I’m 40 as I write this article), I steered towards aerobics.
After spending many years going to the gym, I finally landed in crossfit.
I really wanted to share these advantages and disadvantages guide for training either in Crossfit or at the gym. Because I constantly see people switching from one to the other, not really sure of what they are exactly.
I’m sure that at some point, you’ve joined the gym for only a brief period of time before quitting. Then switched to crossfit only to find out how different they are and dropping out a few days later.
People who love sports don’t settle for simple exercises. That’s why it’s important to evaluate your options. What works for some may not work for others. You can always “test drive it” before you commit.
This is why I have decided to make this guide due to my experience in both training sites. Including, of course, the advantages and disadvantages of training in a traditional gym or Crossfit.
Time is money
Saving time is one of the main advantages here that I value very much. The WODs (workout of the day) are usually one hour long. However, every single minute is very well spent. No time is wasted using your phone or chit-chatting around.
Almost immediate results
Crossfit is a sport that combines different disciplines such as metabolic exercises, weightlifting, powerlifting, and high-intensity gymnastics for all levels.
So, if you regularly attend classes and follow a good diet, physical results are shown quickly. There are no excuses here. During the entire hour of training, you must bring out the very best in yourself. You will not regret the rewards.
One of the most beautiful things you can experience inside the box is companionship. There’s this one rule that says, “if you finish the WOD earlier, you don’t stop cheering for your teammates.” That’s why the box is always charged with positive energy.
Some WODs are designed to be done in couples. This will encourage individual and competitive players to bring out their empathy and companionship spirit. It’s a wonderful and motivational feeling to finish the WOD and hug each other around the box.
Participants also gather and have dinners from time to time. This unites the group more by getting to know each other better, which is always a great idea. Heck, I’ve even seen new couples arise!
Motivation and personal development
This has been one of the most exciting advantages that have helped me in all aspects of my life. First of all, you don’t compete with anyone but yourself.
When you experience that feeling of “personal growth,” endorphins are released, making you feel awesome.
Suppose you’ve already decided to enroll in a crossfit box and are passionate about sports; good for you! Many leagues and championships are organized both locally and nationally for you to access; show everyone your athletic talents and create your own team.
Now, I will explain some disadvantages that make some people throw in the towel before signing up.
Crossfit is expensive
No doubt about this one. But not because the box owners want it to be that way. It’s simply because they have to pay a quote for the “Crossfit” brand, similar to a franchise.
For this reason, amongst other factors, operation costs are increased. This is why crossfit is so expensive compared to a gym.
In crossfit, you have to adapt to whatever the schedule is for any given day. Although you may find more flexible boxes, you’ll have to adapt to specific times to complete your WOD.
Some boxes require you to make reservations in advance. This is because rush hours are common (depending on your area), and if for some reason you didn’t reserve, you’ll lose your spot and miss your WOD.
Finding a gym is easy—crossfit facilities, not so much. Depending on where you live, this can be a problem. Transportation and location should always be assessed before deciding to enroll. Make sure you do a little research around your neighborhood.
I’ve seen crossfit boxes that lack essential equipment or outdated ones. Whatever box you happen to find, make sure it’s fully equipped with the right training materials.
Lastly, you can get burned out if the box doesn’t pose the daily workouts properly to perform all the gymnastics, weightlifting, sticks, etc. It’s not a good idea to repeat the same exercises within short timeframes.
Crossfit cost (as of 2020)
Membership costs will vary depending on your area. For example, in the United States, the average is USD 155.00 a month, with Arkansas being the lowest at USD 97.00 and the District of Columbia the highest at USD 260.00 a month.
In countries around the world, Hong Kong is the priciest at USD 315.00. (now crossfit IS expensive here, LoL) While on the contrary, in Brazil it’s only USD 33.00.
Some other things to consider when joining a box is the type of membership:
- 3 days per week
- 4 days per week
- 5 days per week
- Families and couples
- Others (Open Gym, Weightlifting, etc.)
Traditional gym advantages
- For me, as with most people, the most important advantage is flexibility. The gym allows you to manage your schedule and perform your workouts at your own pace
- It’s way cheaper than crossfit, so it saves money from your monthly income.
- Flexibility to combine exercises at your own pace. For example, you can start with cardio to activate the body and then switch to gymnastics and weights
- A variety of classes such as spinning, zumba, bodyattack, and many more can change the routine a little
Again, the rates are much lower for gyms. Plus, if you get an annual or quarterly fee, it can even get way cheaper. On average, a gym costs 100% less than crossfit.
Disadvantages of going to the gym
Some of the disadvantages that you can find in a gym are the following:
- Lack of space: not all gyms have large gymnastic training or free training apart from dumbbell sections and machines. The truth is that I like training in open areas and many gyms don’t have them. This can be a little frustrating
- You can get easily distracted: by entertaining yourself watching your phone or taking selfies, you waste time and don’t perform well enough (stay calm, it happens to all of us)
- Gyms don’t really promote personal growth: which crossfit does. However, this topic is also quite subjective since most people should already be and stay motivated. Nevertheless, when done as a team, it’s much, much easier
- By 6 o’clock, gyms are usually overcrowded, so if you’re a person who follows a particular and strict routine, you may lose your nerves whenever you have to wait for something to be available. Thus, affecting your schedule with wasted time
My personal experience with both crossfit and gym, final thoughts
After reading this article, it will be much easier to understand why it is crossfit so expensive than a gym. But in the end, it’s your judgment.
My opinion is that I’m totally divided because I love them both. Most of the time, I shoot for crossfit because I like getting out of my comfort zone, which makes me progress more.
There are times when I like more traditional fitness machinery along with the good old gym-ball and do all those crazy exercises that come to mind. I don’t know; it’s just me.
