Shatavari or Asparagus racemosus is one of the leading foods used in ayurvedic medicine today. It’s an herb with great properties and benefits -especially for women- as you will see down below.

Shatavari, scientifically known as Asparagus racemosus, is a medicinal plant native to India.

Thanks to its great benefits for the female reproductive system, it is recognized as an ideal herb for women. Furthermore, it also has healing qualities for the digestive system, making it ideal for everyone.

What is Shatavari used for?

Shatavari is directly related to the female reproductive system because its properties help harmonize and regulate its functioning. It is for this reason that it has been recognized as a plant for women par excellence.

This “ayurvedic herb” is rejuvenating, used by many women of different ages. It contributes to the assimilation of female cycles more easily, including menopause, menstrual cramps, absence of menstruation or amenorrhea, and other imbalances of the reproductive system.

However, Shatavari has great benefits for the digestive system. When Pitta is elevated, Shatavari functions as an element that allows the balance of fire in the system.

Then it is advisable to consult a specialized doctor or an Ayurvedic therapist before starting the consumption to entrust these specialists with the dosage indicated for each person and specific case.

Shatavari or Asparagus racemosus is usually found in capsules, tablets, or powder (churna).

The latter is the most recommended in Ayurvedic medicine because it allows direct contact with the herb and activates the body’s mechanisms more quickly to provide faster support.

It is suggested to consume it in the morning hours; the dosage will vary depending on your needs and goals.

Although, as we indicated, you must first consult a specialist and follow his indications, some of the most common forms of consumption are the following:

  • ½ teaspoon of Shavatari powder is taken and dissolved in a glass of warm milk or water
  • Shatavari tablets are more convenient. These are also usually taken, followed by warm milk or warm water

You can find both tablets and capsules. However, many specialists recommend tablets because they keep a slight herbal taste.

If your tasting senses perceive this flavor, the body will know what is being consumed and accelerate its assimilation.

Besides being mild and sweet, Shatavari is an herb with certain “wisdom,” potent in its action.

In fact, the infusion of this herb has been part of the remedies recommended by the philosophy of Ayurveda for centuries; and now, thanks to a group of scientists from the Asian country, it has also made the leap to medicine thanks to its role as a hormone regulator.

Its main function is to allow a real sexual desire in those moments when the appetite disappears, especially during certain phases of menstruation or menopause.

But it goes beyond that. As explained by Dr. Ajay Kumar Pandey, from Banaras Hindu University (renowned for its biotechnology research), Shatavari infusions also benefit as far as the impact of stress is concerned.

In a study that came out last summer, Pandey highlighted the power of this herb to mitigate menstrual pain (especially in the ovaries) as a regulator of body and hormonal stress and even opened the door to its development as a mitigator of infertility problems.

“It is one of the best known herbal teas thanks to Ayurveda, and yet one of the least studied. We already knew of its power as a sexual stimulator, but its power as a hormonal regulator goes much further,” the professor says.
